06 - 22 - 2010 PennDOT postpones $17 million in road projects
(DI) Road projects worth $17.75 million have been stalled unless PennDOT can find more money. The projects, which include bridge replacements & road resurfacing, were to be funded with money from tolls on I-80. The Federal Highway Administration rejected PA's request to toll the interstate in April. The projects are not necessarily on hold, but they would have gone to construction between 2011 & 2014 had the state agency received Act 44 funding from the interstate tolling. PA has more than 7,000 miles of roads in poor condition & 5,600 structurally deficient bridges—the most in any state, according to PennDOT. Rick Mason, a PennDOT public information officer, said the agency was expecting $500 million statewide for the coming fiscal year, starting July 1, under the tolling plan.
